New Balance 990v4

Original Release: 2016
Style: Retro Runner

The Answer:

Generally speaking, the New Balance 990v4 fits larger in length and width than most other comparable running shoes on the market, new or old.

In addition to the standard width variety, some versions of the New Balance 990v are offered in other wide and narrow width varieties, as well.

Sizing Tips & Suggestions

Sometimes it’s difficult offering sizing suggestions knowing that there are so many varying fit preferences and foot sizes. Even still, here’s my best attempt at offering sizing advice for those interested in purchasing a pair of New Balance 990v4 for the first time.

General Recommendation: Since the shoe runs large, it’s safe to order a half-size down in the 990v4.

Narrow Footers: If you consider yourself to have narrow feet, you can easily go down a half-size from your normal shoe size with the 990v4 and be safe.

Wide Footers: Those with wider feet should definitely stay true to size and possibly go up a half-size depending on how loose or snug you like your shoes to fit.

Those Who Prefer A Snug Fit: If you’re a person who prefers for their shoes to have a snug fit, then definitely go down a half or even a full size.

Those Prefer A Roomier Fit: If you’re a person who prefers for their shoes to have a roomier fit, you should stay true-to-size and those with wider feet.

the shoe’s history

The New Balance 990v4 is a “Made in the USA” retro running shoe that originally released back in 2016 in both men’s and women’s sizes and is the latest iteration of the legendary 990 series.

The original New Balance 990 was released back in 1982 and was the first athletic shoe that retailed for $100. Upon release, New Balance didn’t expect the shoes many pairs, but the shoes went on to sell 3x’s more than what was projected.

This was mainly due to the shoe’s rare combination of cushioning, flexibility, and stability that made it stand out from the competition.

Fast forward to today, and the 990v4 stays true to its revolutionary running shoe heritage and continues to be one of the brand’s most popular retro-runners.

My Personal experience

I’ve personally owned 2 pair of New Balance 990v4 and have always preferred to go down a half-size in this shoe. Since I prefer to wear my shoes loosely laced and going true-to-size makes the shoes a bit too loose for my liking.

From my experience, the 990v4 is a longer shoe than other models, so for those who are in between sizes, I’d definitely say it’s best to go with the smaller size.
