Sneaker Quality:

materials: KITH x New Balance 998

As to be expected with a Kith and New Balance collab, this shoe comes in a mix of premium materials. For starters, the dark navy pigskin suede that dominated the upper is exceptional. With one glance you can tell this is a quality sneaker.

The mesh that makes up the toe box and ankle collar is also a plush addition to the shoe.

Lastly, the pebbled leather on the tongue and mid-foot are also top-notch elements that add to the premium feel of this shoe.

construction: KITH x New Balance 998

I’ve mentioned in other New Balance 998 reviews that the toe box construction can sometimes be hit or miss. However, with this shoe that is not the case. The toe box comes to a nice sharp point which is what I like to see with retro runners.

All of the stitching around the shoe is nice and clean and a testament to the high craftsmanship that New Balance prides itself on with its Made in the USA models.

Sneaker Fit & Comfort:

sizing: KITH x New Balance 998

New Balance 998s in general are a bit wider than most modern running shoes, which makes them a very widefoot-friendly shoe.

Those who have narrower feet or prefer shoes that fit more snug may choose to go a half-size down when buying this shoe. Everyone else can stay true to size.

cushioning: KITH x New Balance 998

This shoe won’t feel as bouncy as a pair of Adidas Ultra-boosts, however, the high level of comfort this shoe provides will stay consistent, longer.

I’ve owned pairs of New Balance 998s for years and have experienced the comfort to get better with time. Although this is a retro shoe, you won’t be disappointed wearing these around town for hours.

Sneaker Style & Value:

wearability: KITH x New Balance 998

Ronnie Fieg over at Kith is known for creating timeless versions of iconic sneakers and this shoe is no exception. The understated design elements make for an extremely wearable shoe that can be rocked with just about anything, all year round.

The “Shark” colorway–which can be classified as a deep navy– is surprisingly more intriguing that most expect. In the shade it can appear to be a charcoal black, but reveals its true tone in the light.

The hits of grey, silver, and white are perfectly executed on the shoe and give the shoe the right amount of pop to complete the look.

pricing: KITH x New Balance 998

This shoe retailed for $180 which is actually the normal retail price for a general release New Balance 998 model.

Considering this is a collab shoe, I’m convinced that this is a value for a sneaker with such great design and manufacturing features.

While a casual consumer may not see the value, a well-seasoned sneakerhead will understand this shoe is well worth the money.
